U.F.O. – (Unidentified Fantastic Object)

E con questa passiamo alla seconda serie, di nuovo l’HP5+, di nuovo un tiraggio. Stavolta si tratta di una macro, fatta con l’anello invertitore e quella santa lente del 50mm f/1.7 rovesciata.
Ma sapete dirmi cos’è questo oggetto? (ovviamente chi lo sa perché mi conosce è escluso dal gioco e se lo dice gli formatto l’hard disk).
So here’s the second series, it’s HP5+ again, another pushed roll. This time it’s a macro, done by inverting that holy 50mm f/1.7 lens by means of an inverter ring.
But can you tell what’s this object? (it’s obvious that those who know that just because they know me are excluded from the puzzle and if they just tell the correct answer I’m gonna format their hard drive).

L’amore ai tempi del lockpicking – Love in the time of Lockpicking

Ai tempi nostri l’amore si esprime così, o almeno lo si pensa: attaccando lucchetti ovunque. Qui, sulla Via dell’Amore alle Cinqueterre l’amministrazione c’ha messo su un business, vendendo i lucchetti con il logo preinciso; comunque la fantasia della gente supera ogni mercato e si arriva anche ai lucchetti a combinazione, alle catenelle e ai pezzetti di stoffa.
Per uno scassinatore come me la tentazione è sempre fortissima. Un bel casino resistere.

Nowadays love is expressed this way, or this is a common feeling: hanging locks everywhere. Here, on the Love Path in Cinqueterre the local administration set up a business selling locks with a cheesy logo; however people’s fantasy goes beyond and you can find combination locks, chains and rags.
To a lockpicker as I am, the temptation is always very strong. Hard to resist.

Turkey in film

Non mi sarei perdonato mai di fare un viaggio e non portare una – una sola – delle mie macchine fotografiche tradizionali. La pellicola si interfaccia diversamente con la realta’ e registra le immagini in maniera differente, ogni pellicola ha le sue caratteristiche e questa volta e’ toccato alla Pentax MX, equipaggiata di qualche rullino b/n di Ilford HP5+ e, per la prima volta, della Pan-F 50 a bassa sensibilita’ poiche’ immaginavo di avere a che fare con molta luce. Per lo stesso motivo avevo portato una pellicola Fuji Velvia 100 per diapositive, piuttosto cara, che e’ rimasta inutilizzata perche’ come ormai sapete abbiamo trovato un tempo piuttosto brutto. Tuttavia, la Pan-F e la HP5+ hanno trovato modo di farsi valere, e qui di seguito potete finalmente vedere una selezione di scatti. Buona visione!

I would never have forgiven myself if I traveled without carrying one – just one – of my traditional cameras. Film connects differently with reality and records images in a different way, every film has its specs and this time it was the turn of the Pentax MX, equipped with some rolls of Ilford HP5+ and, for the first time, low sensibility Pan-F 50 because I imagined to front bright light. That’s why I brought a Fuji Velvia 100 slides film, pretty expensive, which stayed unused because as you know we found an awful weather. Nonetheless, the Pan-F and the HP5+ had the chance to show their value and you can find here a selection of my shots. Enjoy the show!

Hai bisogno di un Corano? Nessun problema. Non e’ come la Bibbia, qui basta andare al mercato e se ne trova di tutte le dimensioni e di tutti i prezzi. E’ vero, la religione permea ancora la cultura turca, ma in una maniera tanto quotidiana da passare inosservata. Beh, almeno finche’ non si incontra uno di questi banchetti.

Do you need a Qur’an? No problem. It’s not like searching a Bible, here you just have to go to the market and you find them in every imaginable size and price. That’s true, Turkish culture is still soaked into religion but in such an ordinary way that’s almost unnoticeable. Well, until you find one of these stands.

Pubblicita’ e moda sono ormai cosa normale, e perfino nella corte di un vecchio caravanserraglio ormai inglobato nel Gran Bazar i negozi di abbigliamento ammiccano come nelle citta’ europee; siamo sempre nel Gran Bazar, comunque, e il turco che vi offre te’ e narghile’ non sembra preoccuparsene troppo.

Advertising and fashion are usual now, and also in the open space of a caravanserai now included into the Grand Bazaar the clothes’ shops wink as if you was in an european city; but we’re still into the Grand Bazaar, however, and the Turk offering tea and waterpipes doesn’t seem to care too much.

La pellicola registra decisamente le emozioni. Sultanahmet. Cara vecchia pellicola.

La Turchia e’ il paese del bacino del Mediterraneo che pesca piu’ pesce in assoluto, visto che non ha alcun regolamento. La cosa buffa e’ che praticamente non lo consuma, se non un po’ di pesce azzurro, palamite e sardine.

Turkey is the country in the Mediterranean basin which fishes mostly, lacking any rule. What’s funny is that fish is not eaten much, apart from a little blue fish, palamuts and sardines.

La Turchia e’ anche e soprattutto commercio. Ogni cosa e’ commerciabile, ogni cosa va contrattata e ovunque e’ mercato. Vale, piu’ che in ogni altro posto, la legge di chi urla piu’ forte.

Turkey is also and mostly trade. Everything can be sold, everything must be bargained and every place is a market. The rule, more than in any other place, is shouting louder to win.

Contrasti tra il sacro e il profano, tra la cultura e il commercio di massa.

Contrasts between sacred and profane, between culture and mass trading.

La stazione di Konya era cosi’ inondata di una luce dorata che non ho potuto fare a meno di scattare anche con la pellicola; premiato, in questo caso, dall’arrivo di un bambino a dare un senso e una proporzione alle valigie in attesa.

Konya railway station was such flooded by golden light that I couldn’t but shoot some film; awarded, in this occasion, by a sudden child giving a meaning to those waiting suitcases.

Il senso del viaggio e’ lo spostamento stesso; la coda del treno aiuta a capire che per vedere posti nuovi occorre lasciarsi alle spalle i posti che ci hanno ospitati, affascinati, fatti sentire a casa anche solo per un momento.

The meaning of traveling is the travel itself; the end of the train helps us to understand that to see new places we have to leave behind those which hosted us, fascinated us and made us feel at home even if just for a moment.

Il senso della morte, invece, e’ del tutto diverso dal nostro. La morte e’ un accadimento comune ed e’ per questo che non e’ raro trovare in piena citta’ delle tombe nei minuscoli vuoti urbani tra un’abitazione e l’altra, come piccoli giardini.

The sense of death, instead, is entirely different from ours. Death is a common happening and this is why it’s not uncommon to find graves downtown into those tiny urban gaps between a dwelling and another, like small gardens.

La religione e’ vissuta in maniera completamente diversa, come di fronte a questa moschea a Konya.

Religion is felt in a completely different way, like in front of this mosque in Konya.

I turchi non bevono molto caffe’, piuttosto bevono tonnellate di çay ovvero te’. Un te’ rosso che scandisce ogni singola azione della loro vita. Non rifiutate mai un bicchierino di te’, vi sentirete a vostro agio e poi e’ molto buono. Ah, e sicuramente riusciranno a farvi comprare qualcosa!

The Turks don’t drink too much coffee, but do drink tons of çay, that’s tea. A red tea which paces every single action of their lives. Never refuse a glass of tea, you’ll feel at ease drinking it and it’s really good. Oh, and you’ll surely get tricked into buying something!

Un improvviso scroscio di pioggia ti costringe in una piccola corte; la merce appesa riempe tutto lo spazio; dall’angolo rialzato attraverso la vetrata di un locale i narghile’ siedono oziosi ed educatamente in fila, in attesa di essere caricati ed usati. Sotto al portico e’ bello rendersi condo di sentirsi un po’ a casa.

A sudden shower forces you to enter a small court; hanging goods fill all the space; from the risen corner, through the large window of a lounge, the waterpipes sit lazy in a polite queue, waiting to be loades and smoked. Under the arcades it’s nice realizing to feel a bit at home.

Here’s what I call fun. You got a deep blue Bug, it’s got a jolly roger over the back seat, you got good glass, nice reflections and the worst film you could think of: a two-years expired roll of Kodak Elitechrome Gold 100 pushed to 400…!
Nice to see you can safely get good b/w pictures out of it.

That is. You buy this cheesy camera, you get a roll of expired film and it’s way too obvious that you gotta shoot whatever you might find, as you’re anxiuos to see how this metal box performs.
Geez, it does perform well! The glass is clear and sharp, the barrel easy to handle, the whole camera is a feather in your hands.
This folk was eating a snack (pizza, nice snack indeed) and I was focusing a bit aside, as in the mess you can’t be noticed too much. The distance was approximately less than 10 ft. and yo him pizza was evidently much more important than me. That’s the shot. Nice focus, good bokeh, and the film after all wasn’t too flat.
The negative has been re-shot with my 5700 and then inverted digitally. I’m curious at what results might I get if I digitized it with a decent scanner…

Tool of the Trade

This is the new tool of the trade. Pentax MX. Expect soon some pictures, shooting with it is way too cool. It took more than ten days to come from UK, but I got it at half the price I could buy it in Lido di Camaiore, so why worry? I shot an entire roll of expired Kodak Elitechrome film with it in a couple of days, fun to use, fun to carry around. A *great* camera, believe me, and if you like to learn it’s a very good tool to get: cheap and perfect. I read it’s the smallest totally manual SLR camera ever; it’s light, indeed, what could be more desirable? a Leica? Would you really feel at ease with a four thousands euros (camera + lens) hanging on your neck? I wouldn’t.
