Redscale railways

“E come mai?”
Provate!

Here’s the first results of a homebrewed redscale film: a supermarket film made by Ferrania. For those who don’t know, it’s grossly taking a common roll of color film and, in the darkroom, flipping the film upside down so that it’s exposed through the supporting layer. The effect is in front of you: a strong boost of red tones as if you used a filter. You have to overexpose by one stop, so a 100 ISO becomes a 50. The funny part of the story was the gag… I go down to the photolab near my office, a one-hour-photo minilab, and I leave them the roll.
When I’m back, the photographer’s wife, at the counter, says:
“the roll you brought in the morning… well… we didn’t process it.”
“So why?”
“Well, it’s… it’s strange! Take a look – and she shows me the roll with the retrieved leader – the film is reversed!”
“Sure, I reversed it!”
Then her face cracked and a big question mark started flashing on her forehead.
Sure, I forgot to tell’em this particular, but what did they think it could happen? Summoning the Devil with a reversed film? Was I shooting ghosts? 😉
Then she invited me in the lab where I happily explained her husband what a redscale film was and how to make them. Funny, at last. Try it!
