Rebirth

Eccola.
Three years ago I bought a pipe, on eBay. One of those worthless pipes you can buy and bring home with twenty euros. The seller, who was selling a stock, was so kind to add a second unsold pipe, as a gift.
An awful pipe, to be honest; with a random rustic finish and painted with the worst naval flatting a ship carpenter could use for the bottom of a skiff’s floor.

Here it is.

So the pipe stayed in my pipes’ box for three years, until I suddenly thought I could bring it back to life.

I took, photographed and assaulted it.

With some filework, sandpaper and iron wool, I straightened and smoothed that horrible bowl, recovered the straight stem line, fixed burrs and connections and at last the pipe became as you see.

A volte certi regali nascondono altri doni.

Basta saperli trovare

I had to leave some bites of the previous rustic finish for at least two good reasons: first, not to excessively thin the bowl’s sides; second, because all in all I liked the idea that the new finish could show the memory of what that pipe was before its restoration. Sort of a historical memory.
Then I finished it by hand with a cotton cloth and beeswax,
While writing I lighted it for the first time. It’s a pleasure too keep it in my mouth, it’s a new pipe. It wasn’t me who made it, sure, but I’m quite satisfied.
Sometimes some gifts hide other gifts.

You just have to find them.
